Our modest journey.
Hey guys! Alicia and Michael here - founders of modest fins.
Our story began as two strangers who met while surfing at Freshwater Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Our friendship blossomed from ‘surfing buddies’ into something a little more special, and we ended up getting married four years later in 2022. (Not a bad way to meet the love of your life, hey?!)
Our mutual love of surfing and road tripping saw us spending countless hours adventuring the east coast of Aus in our 4WD searching for new waves. After getting married, we decided to venture out even further. So we moved to New Zealand, bought a van, and spent the last year chasing as many waves as we could on the North Island.
What sparked modest fins?
Our love of longboarding really blossomed as we travelled and made some incredible friendships with people that we met along the way through surfing.
With these friendships, countless party waves and hours of carpark conversations, we found that finding cool longboard fins was a pain point for a lot of people.
It was here that we encountered 3 problems.
Problem #1
We had invested in buying beautiful boards, however the fins they came with were pretty boring. In search of better fins, we realised there was a huge gap in the market for aesthetic fins to compliment our longboards, especially for the gals!
Problem #2
Single fins can break the bank! Paying up to $200 for a fin seemed a little crazy to us.
Problem #3
We were eager to experiment in our surfing with different fin shapes - but we found it overwhelming to decipher which fins would give us the outcomes we desired in our surfing. It was all too complicated.
We wanted fins that were ‘aesthetic-affordable-simple’.
The search to a solution was fruitless, so we figured - why not just solve these problems ourselves?! And so, modest fins was born.
The future of modest fins
We're creating that fins that we want to ride ourselves, that we know our friends would love and we hope you will too.
We're focused on delivering classic templates to help you improve your surfing and look good while you do it.
The future of modest fins includes more shapes, sizes & designs… but for now, thank you for being here for our humble beginnings.
