Meet Woojin

Woojin's story is one like so many other surfers, learning to surf in his late-twenties, becoming obsessed and falling in love with the lifestyle.

Welcome to our first edition of modest mates, a new series where we introduce you to people in our lives who live and breathe surfing.

These are genuine people we meet along our journey who add something special to our world and deepen our respect and love for the lives we live.

Woojin is a medical student in Taupo balancing life, his career and surfing but who has quickly evolved into an amazing longboarder for the short amount of time he's been surfing.

We spent some time with Woojin, catching a few waves at Waihi, and caught up afterwards for a beer and a chat to capture his story.

How did you get into surfing?

I started surfing only 3 years ago, as the first COVID-19 lockdown was lifted!

I was frustrated and pent up after being stuck at home, got bored of mundane gym sessions and wanted to try something new!

I loved the ocean and loved Chicken Joe... safe to say - I got hooked straight away.

How do you find time for surfing while studying to be a doctor?

One thing I learnt in Medical School was how easy it is to burn out. Assignments, exams, long hours at hospital are mentally draining.

Every chance I get, I make the effort to get out there, because the waves provide an escape for me from all the chaos.

I surf alone when I want to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the little things in life.

Surfing with mates bring me excitement, good vibes, and happiness like no other!

What's one thing you wish you could tell your beginner self?

Start on a foamie, and not a freakin' gun made for 20ft Cloudbreak, ya kook...
